Intense thunderstorms and the season’s first real rain passed across much of the area on Friday night, part of band of thunderstorms expected to bring rain to the area overnight and through Saturday morning.

Around the same time as the rain started in Long Beach, the National Weather Service issued a Special Marine Warning across wide parts of coastal Southern California, noting a cluster of particularly severe thunderstorms capable of producing waterspouts was located near Laguna Beach and moving toward the northeast.

Meanwhile, a beach hazard remains in effect through Sunday evening, with moderate swells and elevated surf bringing increased chances for strong rip currents.

Scattered showers, with a 40-50 percent chance of rain, will remain in the forecast for Long Beach until Saturday afternoon.
