10:00am | Federal judge Vaughn Walker will rule today on the constitutionality of Proposition 8, after months of deliberation. His decision is expected to be announced sometime this afternoon.
Walker will address whether or not Proposition 8 denies equal protection and a fundamental right, both Constitution promises, by banning same-sex marriages.
A rally in Long Beach has been planned tonight in Bixby Park at Broadway & Cherry, the sight of many same-sex support gatherings over the years, regardless of Walker’s decision. The rally will be held from 6:00-8:00pm, “in solidarity for marriage equality and social justice,” according to an e-mail newsletter from The Loop magazine today. The Loop is run by Brad Shore, a North Long Beach activist and one of the candidates in April’s 9th District City Council race.
Either way, don’t expect this battle to stop anytime soon. Walker’s decision can be appealed and could even reach the Supreme Court.
