Usually, Labor Day marks the end of summer weather for Southern Californians. But this year, September’s temperatures have continued to climb, with this weekend being one of the hottest since record-keeping began in 1877.
The National Weather Service of Los Angeles released two notices of triple-digit record-breaking temperatures in Long Beach over the weekend. On Friday, a high of 104 degrees was recorded, breaking the old record of 96 set in 1979. And on Saturday, the high was 103, which breaks the old record of 102, also set in 1979.
Both of these numbers were set at Long Beach Airport’s weather-reporting station and coincided with record-breaking temperatures throughout the region. In Santa Monica, a record-high temperature of 87 degrees was set at the Santa Monica Pier, unusual in that it occurred before mid-morning at 8:25AM.
Temperatures are expected to drop this week with highs today and tomorrow expected at around 85 degrees.
