A record number of voters were registered over the last weekend at the Long Beach Pride Festival. Long Beach Lambda Democratic Club not only helped a record number of attendees register to vote, but also garnered the support of nearly 500 people who pledged to fight for Marriage Equality.
Although the California Supreme Court has just ruled that the state can no longer exclude same-sex couples from civil marriage, opponents are petitioning the court for a stay in hopes of amending the state Constitution via a ballot Initiative in November. Long Beach Lambda is gearing up in case there is a need for an educational campaign.
Lambda’s Booth Organizer, Jim Deaton, was pleased with the turn-out: “I really want to thank all of the volunteers who staffed the booth. We have reason to be proud.”
Many people stopped by with questions about the recent court decision on same sex marriage, and the upcoming elections. Lambda passed out recommendations on judicial candidates and other races and encouraged people to vote.
On Sunday, Lambda walked in the parade with newly elected Lambda President Stephanie Loftin who rode in her Electric Car. She points out that it doesn’t use any gasoline at all; and more importantly, it doesn’t spew exhaust fumes into the air.
