5:38pm | Firefighters are not yet sure how a recycling truck burst into flames around 9:40am this morning in the 2800 block of Ladoga Avenue. No one was hurt and no parked cars were close enough to have sustained any damage,
A Long Beach Fire Department engine responded to the call, and firefighters actually had to climb on top of the truck with their hoses to extinguish the flames from above. Fire and black smoke billowed out of the cabin, and several large explosions rocked the East Long Beach neighborhood as an attack hose line was set up to battle the blaze. Another fire engine was called in for backup because of the size of the vehicle.
In a demonstration of quick thinking, other firefighters blocked off gutters with sand to prevent contaminated water or foam from reaching the storm drains and eventually the ocean. The Health Department is investigating to ensure that the area is safe.
