Democratic incumbent Laura Richardson defeated Independent challenger Nick Dibs and other candidates running as write-ins to retain her seat in California’s 37th Congressional District.  The 37th District includes Compton, Carson, Signal Hill and Long Beach.

Richardson dominated the polls, capturing 75.5% of the vote.

Richardson was originally elected to the position in August 2007, and had to fight off several last-minute candidates who declared her fiscally irresponsible after defaulting on home mortgages.  Her campaign ran on a platform of healthcare, infrastructure and public safety, as well as economic change.

Richardson defeated Dibs, a substitute teacher, as well as Democrat Peter Mathews and Lee Davis, who threw their hats into the ring as write-in candidates.  Mathews publicly challenged Richardson at forums and rallies and launched an aggressive campaign based on education reform.
