Congresswoman Laura Richardson has completed her first sixty days in office after a special election to fill a vacancy left by the late Congressswoman Juanita Millender-McDonald, and she’s already being touted as a possible contender for an upcoming vacancy on the powerful Ways and Means Committee to replace Rep. Mike McNulty of New York – who recently announced that he will not seek re-election next year, a seat usually reserved for the most senior Members.

Chaired by Rep. Charles Rangle of New York, the Committee of Ways and Means is considered to be the most powerful of House Committees.  The Committee has jurisdiction over all taxation, tariffs and other revenue-raising measures, as well as a number of other programs including Social Security, unemployment benefits, Medicare, enforcement of child support laws, temporary assistance for needy families, a federal welfare program, and foster care and adoption programs.

“I came to work hard, make America great again, and deliver for my constituents, and that’s exactly what I intend to do,” said Richardson.

This week Richardson will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, often referred to as The Wall, by participating in the Reading of the Names that will take place for 65 hours over a four-day period.  Richardson will read from a list of names of Vietnam veterans from California’s 37th Congressional District at approximately 5:26 p.m. EST on November 7 at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial located along Constitution Avenue between 21st and 23rd streets in Washington, D.C.
