To improve access to downtown businesses and venues, Long Beach City Councilmember Suja Lowenthal is asking city staff to develop a plan to open the Lincoln and Broadway Civic Center parking garages on evenings and weekends. Her motion will be heard at today’s City Council meeting.
Containing over 1,025 spaces, the Civic Center garages are well situated for downtown visitors and just minutes from Pine Avenue and the Pike. They are largely unused during non-business hours and weekends.
Lowenthal’s motion requests the City Manager to prepare a parking plan that would allow visitors to use the parking structures during high volume evenings and special events. The City Manager’s plan would include estimated operation and maintenance costs, projected revenues from public parking rates, recommended days and hours of operation and an estimated timeline to open the lots.
