6:00am | The San Gabriel River bike path, one of the most heavily used bike trail systems in the area and a vital link to the coastal environment, is being resurfaced. The City of Long Beach and the City of Seal Beach are funding the project, which is in both cities.

The work is scheduled on weekdays beginning yesterday through to Monday, March 26, and will be done in three segments, starting just south of Pacific Coast Highway in Seal Beach and ending at Carson Avenue. There will be no General Fund impact.

While crews are working on one segment, the other two segments will remain open. The bike trail will be resurfaced with asphalt containing recycled rubber from approximately 6,000 old tires. Afterward, new reflective traffic striping and increased signage, including mile-markers, will be installed.

The estimated project cost is $687,657. Of that amount, $200,000 will be offset by grant funds awarded to the City of Seal Beach by the Rivers and Mountains Conservancy.

The City of Long Beach’s share of the project expense is supported by $375,000 in Measure R sales tax funding and $112,657 in Transportation Development Act (TDA) grant funding.

The work will be completed well in advance of the Seal Beach 5K/10K Run on April 21, and the Tour of Long Beach on May 5, which are the next major events that will use the trail.
