Police say they were able to apprehend two burglary suspects Sunday because of help from a witness who recorded video of them fleeing a Seal Beach Target.

On Thursday, Feb. 11 at about 12:49 p.m., Seal Beach police responded to a burglary call at the Rossmoor shopping center on Seal Beach Boulevard, according to the department. Two suspects had stolen alcohol and electronics from the Target before fleeing the scene in a white Dodge truck, police say.

The first suspect left the Target with the stolen merchandise and drove the getaway vehicle behind the store, police say. The other suspect then ran out of an emergency exit, carrying $1,000 in merchandise before haphazardly throwing the stolen goods into the bed of the truck and jumping in before the vehicle sped off, authorities say.

Police say the witness who captured the video recording was parked behind the Target at the time of the incident. Upon seeing what was happening, the witness promptly called police while recording, authorities say.

With the witness’ video and Target’s in-store video security camera footage, Seal Beach police say they were able to quickly identify the suspects and arrest them four days later at a hotel in El Segundo. During a search of the hotel room, police say they found a stolen handgun, approximately one ounce of suspected heroin and methamphetamine, $2,000 in cash, multiple ID cards, bank and credit cards, and tools which investigators believe are also stolen property.

Police identified the suspects as 36-year-old William Joseph Erwin, of Lakewood, and 22-year-old Daniella Mason Carpenter, of Pasadena.

“This is just another example of the excellent work our patrol officers and detectives do every day,” Seal Beach Police Chief Philip L. Gonshak said in a statement. “Criminals who victimize Seal Beach will be captured. We are grateful to the witness who recorded the suspects fleeing the scene of the crime and the El Segundo Police Department for their assistance.”

Erwin was arrested on suspicion of burglary, being a felon in possession of a firearm, being a felon in possession of ammunition, possession of stolen property and conspiracy, among other charges. Carpenter was arrested on suspicion of burglary, conspiracy and a felony arrest warrant. Both suspects were later booked at the Orange County Jail. Police say the investigation is still ongoing.
