Assemblymember Ricardo Lara

11:55am | Assemblymember Ricardo Lara announced several endorsements in his race for the 33rd Senate District. Lara earned support from Congresswoman Linda Sanchez, the California Nurses Association, and the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund. So far Lara is facing only one other candidate, Long Beach Assemblymember Bonnie Lowenthal.

“Ricardo has been a tireless and courageous leader in our community. He has consistently put forward smart legislation which protects taxpayers and will help our state compete effectively in the new global economy.  I am proud to stand by him and look forward to continuing to work with him when he enters the State Senate,” said Congresswoman Linda Sanchez.

Congresswoman Sanchez’s 39th district includes the cities of South Gate, Lynwood, Paramount, Lakewood, Cerritos, La Mirada, South Whittier and portions of Whittier, Artesia and Hawaiian Gardens.

The California Nurses Association has also announced its early endorsement of Ricardo Lara.

“Ricardo has shown solid leadership as a Legislator where he has put the safety of children and patients above politics and rhetoric. He understands the health-care needs and challenges our state is facing and is the type of leader we need in the Senate,” said Malinda Markowitz, RN, Co-President, California Nurses Association/National Nurses United (CNA/NNU). “The CNA is proud to endorse Ricardo Lara for the 33rd Senate District.”

CNA represents approximately 40,000 nurses throughout the State. These are highly trained medical professionals who are ‘first responders’ to a host of medical emergencies, often serving as the front line for patients’ health care.

Today, the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund announced its early endorsement of Ricardo Lara.

“Ricardo has been a true champion of equality for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.  His leadership in creating the LGBT Latino Select Committee of the Latino Legislative Caucus is an example of his commitment to providing sound policy recommendations to the LGBT and Latino Caucuses,” said Chuck Wolfe, president and CEO of the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund.  “His election will also make history, as Ricardo would be the first gay person of color to be elected to the State Senate.”

Wolfe went on to praise Ricardo’s work on the LGBT Latino Select Committee of the Latino Legislative Caucus as an example why the Victory Fund works so hard to elect LGBT candidates at every level of government.

“It’s an honor to have the Victory Fund’s support for my campaign,” said Lara. “The way for every American to truly enjoy liberty and justice for all is to challenge the regrettable status quo of prejudice and intolerance in our country. I am looking forward to doing my part in the State Senate to reach true equality for all Americans.”

Lara has also been endorsed by five local leaders; Ofelia Hernandez, Mayor of the City of Huntington Park, Aide Castro, Mayor of the City of Lynwood, Maria Davila, Mayor of the City of South Gate, Jennifer Rodriguez, Mayor of the City of Bell Gardens, and Diane J. Martinez, Council Member for the City of Paramount.
