8:44am | Assemblymember Ricardo Lara released a statement today formally announcing his candidacy for the newly drawn 33rd Senate District. Lara will face current Long Beach Assemblymember Bonnie Lowenthal.
“We face a record jobless rate with education and health care under constant threat of deeper cuts. These challenges don’t stop at some arbitrary district lines,” said Lara, who currently represents the State Assembly’s 50th District, which overlaps several communities that are now part of the newly drawn 33rd Senate District.
The newly drawn 33rd Senate District includes the cities of Vernon, Huntington Park, Maywood, Bell, Cudahy, Bell Gardens, South Gate, Lynwood, Paramount, Signal Hill, Lakewood and Long Beach and the unincorporated communities of Walnut Park and Florence-Graham.
“Ricardo is a champion for our students, dedicating his life to make sure our public schools have the resources they need to help our children excel,” said Ofelia Hernandez, Mayor of the City of Huntington Park. “I am proud to endorse him for State Senate.”
“I worked this year to meet the needs of our communities with a package of legislation that improved access to education, consumer protections, government transparency and fair tax policies,” added Lara. “I look forward to continue serving our communities in the State Senate.
Ricardo currently represents the 50th Assembly District, which includes the of Cities of Bell, Bell Gardens, Bellflower, Commerce, Cudahy, Lynwood, and South Gate, along with portions of Downey, and communities of Walnut Park and Florence-Graham. He serves as Chairman of the Joint Legislative Audit Committee and the Select Committee on Financial Empowerment and serves as a member of the Appropriations, Higher Education, Banking and Finance, and Water, Parks and Wildlife committees.
