When that catchy tune you’re humming along to is the soundtrack to your elevator ride, it’s probably time to admit that you’ve entered your golden years. Luckily there’s a place for you.

Thanks to Councilmember Al Austin II and the Eighth District Senior Advisory Committee (SAC), local seniors are invited to a kick-off event for a new program of activities geared toward adults 55 and older at the Expo Arts Center on Thursday, October 15 between 10:00AM and 12:00PM.

To be featured on Thursday is an introduction to the free programming that is slated to commence on Tuesday, October 20 and take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Expo between 10:00AM and 2:00PM, all geared toward building a thriving community.

“When I took office three years ago, I noticed that there was a void in senior programming in the community,” said Councilmember Austin in a statement. “We brought seniors together through our Eighth District Senior Advisory Committee and these programs are the result of their hard work.”

Committee member Barbara Shoag says oftentimes seniors in the community don’t have a place to go during the day, so the SAC created this program as a starting point.

“We are hoping to get feedback from participants and adjust the program to fit the community’s needs as we go along,” she said in a statement.

During the kick-off event, attendees will learn about the classes and programs to be offered and be encouraged to provide their input on other activities they would like to see in the future. Lunch, refreshments and prizes will be provided, along with free flu shots while supplies last, courtesy of Walgreens.

Starting on Tuesday, October 20, activities for the city’s most seasoned veterans of life will begin at 10:00AM, right around their lunchtime.

  • 10:00AM to 11:00AM: Exercise Class (yoga, tai chi, dance, etc.)
  • 11:00AM to 12:00PM: guest speaker (Tuesdays) and knitting/arts and crafts (Thursdays)
  • 12:00PM to 1:00PM: lunch
  • 1:00PM to 2:00PM: music and games (bingo, cards, etc).
