The Long Beach Water Department has restored normal service to the Westin Long Beach after capping a sewer overflow that was causing sewage to flow into the hotel’s underground parking structure.
Matthew Veeh, a Water Department spokesman, says that the incident was reported around 1:30PM Wednesday afternoon and employees responded immediately and implemented a sewer bypass to stop the overflow. After restoring services, employees pinpointed the source of the break.
“It has been determined that there is some kind of break on one of the 18″ sewer mainlines in the area,” said Veeh. “The line in question is located 20 feet deep, meaning that it will take some time to trench the area and make the fix.”
While crews are working quickly, the rainy weather expected through the weekend could potentially delay a permanent fix on the line until early next week when the rain subsides.
Meanwhile, the Water Department has been working with the hotel and City’s Health Department to accomodate anyone who had a vehicle in the parking structure and they have also enlisted an environmental company that specializes in overflow clean-ups to help restore the lot to good condition.
“The more important thing is that the overflow was stopped and services are currently normal,” said Veeh.
