An explosion Tuesday evening in a shipping container loaded with scrap metal intended to be exported out of the country prompted evacuations at the Port of Los Angeles and was believed to be an industrial accident.

“Scrap metals which contain some chemicals and some other agents possibly could have led to the explosion,” Los Angeles Port Police Deputy Chief Randy Allen said. “That’s why we are considering it an industrial accident.”

The explosion was reported just before 6 p.m. in the 100 block of South Ferry Street, according to Amy Bastman of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The explosion occurred at the Evergreen Shipping terminal, one of seven at the port, Port of Los Angeles spokesman Phillip Sanfield said.

A bomb squad was sent to check out the other containers to make sure there was no additional danger, according to Sanfield, who said over 100 people, including truckers, were evacuated from the terminal while the investigation was underway.

“We have no indication it was anything other than an industrial accident,” Allen said.

No injuries were reported as a result of the blast.
