Police arrested a man after he shot a gun into the air during an argument in West Long Beach Thursday night, authorities said.

The shooter was arguing with another man in an alley near 19th Street and Canal Avenue when he pulled out the gun and fired several times, according to police.

Someone heard the shots around 7:45 p.m. and called police, LBPD spokeswoman Jennifer De Prez said.

When officers arrived, they saw a man and woman coming out of a driveway on 19th Street, according to De Prez.

The woman appeared to be hurt, so officers stopped the pair, “thinking she may have been a victim of the shooting,” De Prez said.

The woman’s injury ended up being minor and unrelated to the gunfire, De Prez said, but officers were able to confirm that the man was the shooter.

Police identified him as Francisco Hernandez Cervantes, a 40-year-old who lives in the neighborhood.

He was booked into Long Beach Jail on suspicion of negligent discharge of a firearm and held on $35,000 bail, police said.

It doesn’t appear anyone was hurt by the gunfire.

Police said they found bullet casings in the alley between Summit Street and 19th Street, where it appears the shooting took place.
