2:00pm | A pilot program will place solar-powered trash and recycling containers in three Long Beach locations for six months, with the eventual goal of expanding to heavily trafficked locations throughout the city. Many of the containers are used across the country in an effort to be more environmentally friendly.
The weekly Bixby Knolls e-mail newsletter Bixby Knolls Banter announced yesterday that one of the units will be placed at 36th & Atlantic Avenue.
The bins use power from the sun to compact about 150 gallons of trash into a 32-gallon bin, according to a press release from the City of Long Beach’s Office of Sustainability. The idea is to save money while trash collections will be reduced, and also to assist recycling efforts. One bin is for trash and the other is for bottles, cans and paper.
More information will be available on the project tomorrow.
