Sprouts, a growing chain that touts its organic products and locally grown farm produce, plans to open its first location in Long Beach at the Traffic Circle.
The store would replace a shuttered Staples office supplies location in a commercial center at 4600 E. Pacific Coast Highway near Ximeno Avenue.
It wasn’t clear when the store will open. A company spokesperson couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.
Company officials, however, are applying for a license to sell alcohol, which the city’s Planning Commission will consider on Thursday, July 18.

City planning staff said improvements to the location — including a new facade, patio seating and landscaping — are already in the inspection stages.
The company said in its correspondence to the commission that the full-service store will be over 23,000 square feet with a bakery, meat counter and deli. It will employ roughly 100 workers.
The Long Beach store will sell “farm fresh” produce and bulk items that include grains, candy, nuts and more, and an extensive collection of health food and health products.

“Sprouts market has carved out that magical middle ground between conventional supermarkets and healthy food superstores, making this a unique retailer in this neighborhood,” the company said in its letter to the Planning Commission.
Sprouts operates stores in Lakewood and Seal Beach, but this would be the first in Long Beach. The company also plans to open a store in Lawndale next month.
Sprouts employs more than 36,000 people and operates 393 stores in 23 states, including 133 stores in California.
