A suspect is in custody after a man was shot and killed Saturday night trying to leave the scene of a dispute near Orange Ave. and South St.
The victim was shot at around about 9:10PM as he got into his car in the 1200 block of East Phillips Street and, according to police, was driven by a female friend to the area of Locust Ave. and Home St., where she came across officers investigating an unrelated shooting incident that had occurred just 25 minutes prior.
“Due to the grave condition of the victim, officers immediately transported him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased,” said Long Beach police spokeswoman Nancy Pratt.
An investigation revealed that the victim–who was identified as 18 year-old Jamal Lindsey of Long Beach–and a male acquaintance were involved in a dispute and that when the victim got into a vehicle to leave the location, the male acquaintance fired at the victim, striking him multiple times in the upper torso. Police returned to a residence in the 1200 block of Phillips Street and took 20-year-old Derome Harper was taken into custody.
He has been booked for murder and is being held at the Long Beach City Jail without bail. The incident was being investigated as gang-related.
Despite their close proximity, two Saturday night shootings are not believed to be related, though a man was also transported to the hostpial in the first incident, albeit with non life-threatening injuries. There is no suspect information in that shooting.
Lindsey, who according to his Facebook profile was an “entrapreneur,” was mourned by his friends and family on social media Sunday.
