The beach and bike path between Junipero Ave. and Belmont Plaza Pool were closed for about four hours this morning while the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Bomb Squad investigated a report of a suspicious device partially buried the sand.

According to police, the device was discovered around 7:20AM Friday by a Public Works employee who was clearing debris from the beach near where Paloma Ave. hits Ocean Blvd. in Bluff Park.

A crowd of residents–many of whom were routed away from the scene during their morning jog or bike ride–formed at the railing along Bluff Park to watch the inspection.

“They found it to be a bbq lighter and some wires, but nothing suspicious and nothing live,” Ledesmond said.

At around 10AM, police activity in the area began to dissipate and by 11AM, the beach and bike path were reopened.
