UPDATE: Long Beach roads near the Traffic Circle Area were reopened Wednesday afternoon and buildings were considered safe to enter following an investigation of a suspicious object left at the East Police Sub-Station earlier in the day, authorities said.
According to the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD), a man arrived at the substation at 11:15AM and made anti-police comments before placing an object in between the handle and the glass of the main entrance doors of the station.
Police then requested assistance from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department bomb squad and evacuated the substation and nearby residential units and businesses, officials said.
Los Coyotes Diagonal, from the Traffic Circle to Clark Avenue, was closed to all traffic as well.
The bomb squad was able to determine that the object did not contain any explosive material.
During the investigation, the suspect’s vehicle was searched, but no potential explosive devices were found, authorities said.
The suspect—described only as a Lakewood resident—was being held for mental evaluation, according to officials.
The incident ended at about 1:35PM.
