Pacific Avenue from Pacific Coast Highway to 20th Street was shut down Thursday afternoon as police attempted to get a suspect with an outstanding warrant to surrender.

The situation began about 4:05 p.m. when police pulled a driver over near the 1800 block of Pacific Avenue. After initially talking to police, he ran from the officers and barricaded himself in a room police believe he rented at a nearby motel, Sgt. Alvino Herrera said.

Police set up a perimeter around the motel and tried to get the man to surrender, but eventually called the LBPD SWAT team, he said.

A spokeswoman on Friday morning said police were unable to find the man in the motel and police began to clear the scene at about 8:30 p.m.

She said the man was wanted on a federal weapons-related warrant.
