Under sunny skies with winds capping at 12 knots on Sunday, Great Britain’s skipper Ian Williams outsailed Long Beach Yacht Club member Scott Dickson to win the 55th Congressional Cup in the waters off the Belmont Pier.
On the opening day of the 52nd Congressional Cup, serving as Stage Two of the World Match Racing Tour (WMRT), a dozen of the world’s top ranked skippers scrapped through unpredictable winds and head-to-head matches.
Canfield and his US One Team defended the Congressional Cup title during an unpredictable five-day series of races. At the sudden-death final match, Canfield barely edged Robertson out by nearly a boat-length. According to the release, Canfield led by mere meters at the finish, during a final race he later described as “intense.”
Thursday’s turbulent weather made for a dramatic second day of racing at the Long Beach Yacht Club’s 51st Congressional Cup regatta, the season opener for the 2015-16 World Match Racing Tour. The matches were postponed after two flights of racing when the rain and clouds whited out the course.
