Long Beach renters get new protections under City Council’s emergency housing law

Councilmembers unanimously passed an emergency ordinance to fix what they considered a flaw in the state’s new housing law, which went into effect in January and allowed tenant evictions from units that landlords said were going to be demolished or substantially remodeled.

A vote on the proposed ordinance, which will mandate landlords to pull permits and show proof to tenants before evicting them, has been set for Feb. 18.

Council to consider giving renters more protection from unjust evictions

On Tuesday, the council will consider asking the city attorney to draft an urgency ordinance that clarifies the process and requirements to prove that a unit will be undergoing substantial renovations, clearing the way for an eviction.
