Living in Long Beach has really created a consciousness of the housing crisis in my own community.  This crisis is not just another news topic on television that has not impacted my life and the lives of my neighborhood.  There are a number of bank owned condominiums in my block and I have seen a significant increase of houses, apartments and condominiums for rent.  I really hope the economic challenges that we face begin to make a turn for the best.  In the meantime we have to be educated and well versed on how to avoid being a victim of a temporary situation.

In the last year, I have heard friends and family share horror stories about mortgage modification programs and companies that have taken advantage of their situation.  At the same time, these same friends have been forced to become renters.  This doesn’t surprise me since there has been an increase in rental homes.  I don’t need to quote statistics.  I live it every day in my neighborhood; the demand of rental property is higher than last year or the year before.  Therefore, I was glad to see that the Neighborhood Resource Center will be offering a workshop called, “Tenants Rights Workshop:  Learn your rights and your responsibilities.”

My hope is that our community members gain knowledge about their rights and responsibilities and prevent housing stressful situations.  The workshop will be held on Wednesday, April 1, 2009 from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the center located at 425 Atlantic Avenue.  The presenters are the Fair Housing Foundation & Legal Aid Foundation.

The Training will include:
