The Knight Foundation announced this week that the Knight Cities Challenge, now in its third year, will be open for submissions Monday, October 10 through Thursday, November 3.
Applicants can submit their innovative ideas for improving one of the 26 communities where Knight invests and compete for a portion of the $5 million distributed to the challenge’s winners.
Most recently, City Fabrick and the City of Long Beach’s Innovation Team were awarded thousands for their ideas to encourage more people to vote in low voter turnout areas and to create an outdoor office in a public park to encourage creativity, collaboration and productivity.
Other great ideas to come out of previous challenges include Long Beach resident Rachel Ng’s mission to create a neighborhood-based skills exchange and Nostrum, Inc.’s placemaking goal to create vertical gardens, rock climbing, film screens and visual art for their project entitled “Living Walls.”
Although the two finalists were not awarded in the end, the Long Beach community never fails to impress with their enthusiasm to create and better their environment.
Since the very first challenge in 2014, nearly 70 projects have shared $10 million, according to the announcement. The foundation is looking for ideas that impact three facets that make a city successful: attracting and retaining talent, increasing economic opportunity and promoting civic engagement.
