Thanks to all who attended, contributed to or otherwise assisted with the annual “Walk like MADD” event held at the Queen Mary events park on Saturday, September 26, 2009! The event more than exceeded its fundraising goal as Mothers Against Drunk Driving continues the fight to increase public awareness.

By all measures the event, whose “Local Presenting Sponsor” was Steinberg & Spencer, Injury Lawyers, was once again a huge success.

Ms. Tamara Raices, Director of Development for MADD Los Angeles/Ventura County, told me that some 2800 walkers/runners trekked over the 5K course that ran from the Queen Mary, over the Queensway Bridge to the downtown area and back again. Over 1,000 contributors have supported the event so far and more donations continue to be received each day.

Despite the early morning fog, the festival atmosphere at the events park could not be dampened as local police band “Blue Steel” entertained the crowd before the kickoff and thousands of attendees visited the many informational booths and participated in other entertaining activities.

MADD Los Angeles/Ventura County had set a fund raising target of $80,000 for this event but has now far exceeded that goal, raising $88,656.35 as of this writing. It’s important to note that contributions in support of this specific event can be made through the end of October so if you’re only just now hearing about this excellent opportunity, it’s not too late to help.

The best way to contribute is to visit the event website, here.

MADD’s annual “Walk like MADD” event raises funds to help people in our community by providing free victim survivor support, by teaching kids to be smart and safe passengers and by reminding people to designate a sober driver. The “Walk like MADD” walk helps MADD support other programs for both victims
of drunk driving as well as programs to help prevent drunk driving and underage drinking.

Does this sort of event sound like one you wished you had heard about sooner? Never fear, MADD will be back at the Queen Mary events park again next year, on Saturday, September 25th, 2010 to host another “Walk like MADD” 5K walk/run. Mark your calendars now and start organizing your Teams and arranging sponsors.

Hopefully next year’s event will be even bigger and more productive than this year’s has proved to be.

And with your help it’s certain to be!

I very much welcome your questions and your comments.
