3:39pm | Long Beach Lambda Democratic Club will honor late civil rights leader Jean Harris and the late Senator Jenny Oropeza at their annual Human Rights Banquet on October 15, 2011 aboard the historic Queen Mary.

The Woman of the Year Award will be renamed after Jean Harris and given to her posthumously. The Banquet will also feature a brand new award, the Jenny Oropeza Ally of the Year Award, which honors heterosexual residents who advocate on behalf of LGBT issues. The first recipient of the new award will be Sharon Weissman, the former Chief of Staff to the late State Senator.

Other honorees this year include Assemblymember Betsy Butler, LA County Assesor John Noguez, Honor PAC, The Art Theatre and Member of the Year David Hensley. The Michael Longergan Memorial Award has not been announced yet.

“We are honored to have such outstanding leaders in our community to recognize,” said President Cory Allen. “It is a small token of our appreciation as an organization, to thank these leaders for the great work they have done and continue to do.”
