Port drivers and union members culminate a three-day march from Hollywood to San Pedro today in their fight for better treatment and cleaner vehicles. Many environmental activists have joined in on the cause and will complete the journey, “Hollywood To The Docks,” along with the drivers. Partnering groups include the Coalition for Clean Air, the American Lung Association of California, the Natural Resources Defense Council and others.
“Our movements have joined forces to fight the race to the bottom and create good, green jobs together,” said Tom Politeo, chair of the Sierra Club’s Harbor Vision Task Force in a released statement. “Sustainable cities need livable wages, period. Just like we couldn’t tackle pollution without taking on poverty at our ports, we’re not going to reverse global warming unless all workers can share in prosperity of today’s global economy.”
A blue-green alliance (port and environment) picnic will be held with Assemblymember Warren Furutani at noon at Ken Malloy Harbor Regional Park, 25820 Vermont Ave, Harbor City. A rally will follow, and environmentalists will host an information booth at Ports ‘O Call.
