In March of this year, 2nd District Councilmember Suja Lowenthal asked Long Beach citizens to rename the Transit Mall Station on 1st Street between Pine and Pacific Avenues after it was discovered that the current name did not abide by Metro’s station-naming policy.

The station, having served Metro Blue Line passengers for 23 years, does not have a geographic indicator within it; per MTA policy, stations must refer to a nearby street or freeway, destination or landmark, community or district name, or city name.

This provided Long Beach with the chance to formally re-name the station–even though the Transit Mall is now a landmark in Long Beach.

However, the original moniker came in second place with 61 votes, behind “Downtown Long Beach Station” with 169 votes.

Lowenthal has an item on tonight’s Council agenda to recommend “Downtown Long Beach Station” to Metro for adoption.
