3:00pm | GreaterLongBeach.com and the Long Beach Water Department are presenting a special lecture, ‘A Greater California in Your Front Yard,’ tonight at 6:30pm. Mike Evans of Tree of Life Nursery in San Juan Capistrano, will be lecturing and teaching participants how use native plants for a more sustainable — not to mention beautiful — front yard.
Many home gardeners and landscapers are fearful of native plants because of the lack of knowledge regarding their care and maintenance along with an equal fear of getting rid of the ease that is lawn maintenance. Enter Evans, an approachable speaker who is equal parts devoted botanist and a Johnny Appleseed for the salvia set. His missionary-like zeal for creating California environments that are natural and sustainable is a larger part of his lure.
The Long Beach Water Department has an additional incentive for qualifying customers: a financial subsidy of up to $2,500 from its recently restocked Lawn-to-Garden program. The evening will also feature testimonials from people who have removed the grass in favor of California native plants.
Tonight’s lecture will be held at the Groundwater Treatment Plant Auditorium at 6:30pm, 2950 Redondo Avenue at Spring.
