Two men were killed in separate traffic collisions Friday night and early Saturday morning, Long Beach police said.

On Friday, officers were sent to the area of Cherry Avenue and 45th Street near Bixby Knolls regarding a collision between a vehicle and a tree, police said.

At the scene, Long Beach Fire Department personnel were administering aid to the driver, who was only identified as an 18-year-old resident of Paramount, police said. He died at the scene, according to police.

Preliminary investigation showed that a 2002 Subaru was traveling at a high rate of speed southbound on Cherry Avenue in the southbound lanes when the driver lost control of the vehicle and struck the center divider, police said.

The Subaru crossed the center divider and continued southbound Cherry Avenue in the northbound lanes, police said. The vehicle struck the east curb of Cherry Avenue and then struck a tree where the vehicle came to rest, according to police.

Police are not sure if distracted or impaired driving resulted in the collision at this time.

Later that night, officers were sent to the area of Technology Place and Pacific Coast Highway in West Long Beach shortly after midnight, regarding a traffic collision, police said.

The driver of the vehicle, identified only as a 40-year-old man from Long Beach, was transported to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries, police said.

An early investigation revealed that the pick-up truck he was driving was traveling at a high rate of speed westbound on Pacific Coast Highway, according to police. A tractor-trailer was stopped at a red light on Pacific Coast Highway at Technology Place and begun to accelerate through a green light when the pick-up truck rear-ended the tractor-trailer, police said.

It wasn’t immediately clear if distracted or impaired driving were factors in the collision, police said.
