A bout of “unusually cold weather” for mid-February is expected to hit Southern California beginning Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Long Beach can expect a 20% chance of showers tonight and into early Tuesday, but the most significant impacts of the storm system are expected to be high winds and a drop in temperatures, according to forecasters.

Long Beach is expected see a high of 58 degrees during the day Tuesday that will drop to a low of 39 Tuesday night. Wednesday will be similarly chilly, with a high of 61 and a low of 38. Temperatures will begin a slow climb back up starting Thursday, when a high of 62 and a low of 41 is expected. The NWS is currently forecasting a slight chance of rain in Long Beach over the weekend.

The region should also brace for “potentially damaging winds with downed trees and power outages” over the next few days, the NWS tweeted Monday. Gusts as high as 40-60 mph are expected along the Los Angeles area’s coasts and valleys on Tuesday.
