The man has been identified as Howard Webb, 57, of Compton, according to information provided by the L.A. County Coroner.

Webb’s naked body was found floating in the small body of water near Colorado Street and Appian Way at about 6:15 a.m. Monday morning, police said.

Webb’s death has been preliminarily listed as a probable accidental drowning, though there is a possibility that he committed suicide, Assistant Coroner Chief Ed Winter told City News Service.

LOng Beach police Sgt. Rico Fernandez said Monday that no signs of foul play were detected at the scene and that it appeared Webb had entered the water on his own.

Investigators believe he may have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of his death. Toxicology results from an autopsy conducted Monday will not be available for at least a couple of weeks.

Monday, May 16, 11:35am |
The body of an older man was found floating in Colorado Lagoon Monday morning, police said.

Sgt. Rico Fernandez of the Long Beach Police Department said residents who live adjacent to the lagoon saw the body floating on the surface of the lagoon and called police at about 6:15 a.m. Monday.

While awaiting police and paramedics to arrive, residents who live in the area where Belmont Shore and Belmont Heights meet pulled the man’s body to the shore. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Long Beach Fire Department paramedics, Fernandez said.

The sergeant said that at this time, the death is being considered accidental because no signs of foul play were detected.

The man was naked when he was pulled from the small body of water on Colorado Street and adjacent to Appian Way, and Fernandez said it appeared that he had removed his clothing himself.

Police believe he may have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol and had entered the water to cool off, Fernandez said.

The man remained unidentified Monday morning and was described only as an older black male. The L.A. County Coroner will identify the body and conduct an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death, Fernandez said.
