3:31pm | Los Angeles City Councilmember Janice Hahn has announced her intention to run for the recently-vacated seat in the House of Representatives left by the departure of Jane Harman. Hahn currently represents a district in Los Angeles that extends into the South Bay.

“As someone who has served in local government for almost a decade, I want to bring that perspective and experience to Congress,” Hahn said in a statement today.

“It’s time we end the corporate tax giveaways to multinational corporations that send jobs overseas and invest those dollars in businesses that create jobs here at home.  We need to invest in a clean-energy economy and there’s no better place to start than right here in the 36th Congressional District.”

10:07am | Representative Jane Harman (D-Venice) will resign her Congressional seat in order to pursue other opportunities, according to a report this morning from the Los Angeles Times. Harman’s 36th District runs as far north as Santa Monica, along the Pacific Ocean encompassing Los Angeles International Airport and a slew of beach communities, and coming to rest along the western Long Beach border.

Harman will assume the head leadership position at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, which pays tribute to the memory of the late President. The Washington think-tank offers scholarships and fellowships for advanced study.

Harman is currently serving her ninth term in the House of Representatives. She is considered a more centrist Democrat and her departure comes as Republicans recently took control of the House. A special election will likely be needed to fill the position.
