UPDATE: Friday, June 3, 5:46pm | Long Beach Television, better known as LBTV, won all 11 of the government programming STAR Awards for which it was nominated at the States of California and Nevada National Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors annual conference June 2 in Long Beach.
Established in 1996, the Star Awards recognize outstanding community TV programming produced by local jurisdictions serving California and Nevada communities.
“LBTV provides our community with some the nation’s best local programming,” said Mayor Bob Foster in a statement. “I know first-hand that the LBTV staff are talented and hard-working professionals who are vital to telling viewers why it’s great to live and work in Long Beach in an informative and entertaining way.”
LBTV received four first-place awards, five second-place awards including the prestigious Overall Excellence Award, and two third-place awards.
LBTV’s award-winning programs are:
“Earth Week in Action,” first place – Promotion
“Long Beach: The Source,” first place – Video Text/Bulletin Board
“Long Beach Solar Grand Prix,” first place – Community Event
“Long Beach Solar Grand Prix,” first place – Environmental
“Inside Long Beach,” second place – Economic Development
“Go Long Beach,” second place – Instructional
“Snapshot Long Beach”, second place – Magazine Format
“SportsBreak,” second place – Sport Show
“Overall Excellence in Programming,” second place – Overall Excellence
“Long Beach Connect,” third place – News Series
“Poppin’ for Peace,” third place – Promotion
“We’re thrilled to have received these awards,” station manager Dean Smits said after receiving the awards. “Much like the diversity that’s reflected in the city, the recognition we received today was in a plethora of programming categories.”=

The government programming STAR awards recognize outstanding community television programming produced by local jurisdictions serving communities in California and Nevada.
A number of LBTV programs in various categories were tapped by SCAN NATOA to contend. They include:
- “The Long Beach Solar Grand Prix Festival” (Community Event and Environmental categories)
- “Long Beach Connect” (News Series)
- “SportsBreak” (Sports Show)
- “Snapshot Long Beach” (Magazine)
- “Inside Long Beach” (Economic Development
- “GO Long Beach” (Instructional)
- “Long Beach: The Source” (Video Text/Bulletin Board)
- “Poppin’ for Peace” and “Earth Week in Action” (Promotion)
In addition to the aforementioned programs, LBTV was also nominated for the “Overall Excellence Award,” according to information provided by Long Beach City Hall.
It should be noted that while the information provided by City Hall states that the station is up for 11 awards, there are only 10 awards listed.
Winners will be announced during SCAN NATOA’s annual conference, slated this year for June 2 in Long Beach, according to City Hall.
The local cable station’s programming is often featured on the city’s Facebook page and on Youtube.org, according to City Hall.
The STAR Awards were launched in 1996.
