A hostage situation that occurred Friday afternoon in Long Beach resulted in an officer-involved shooting that claimed the life of the hostage-taker, police said.

Officers with the Long Beach Police Department responded to a residence in the 6100 block of Rosebay Street on Friday, July 1, at about 12:15 p.m. after a distraught woman called 9-1-1 to report that her estranged husband had broken into her parents’ home and was holding them hostage, according to information provided by LBPD spokeswoman Lisa Massacani.

The caller told police that she had spoken to her estranged husband over the phone and he had threatened to kill her parents if she called police. She also said that the man was known to carry guns and knives, Massacani said.

Additionally, police had reason to believe that there was a firearm in the home, Massacani said.

The officer-involved shooting occurred during a confrontation with the suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene, Massacani said.

The man’s identity was not immediately confirmed by the L.A. County Coroner’s Office.

The LBPD is investigating the incident, as is the L.A. County District Attorney’s Office. The D.A.’s office typically conducts independent investigations of all officer-involved shootings that occur countywide.
