UPDATE | California Highway Patrol has shut down portions of the 710 freeway in North Long Beach due to flooding from heavy rain and hail Wednesday afternoon.

CHP shut down both sides of the freeway at the 91 freeway, according to Long Beach Police spokeswoman Shaunna Dandoy.

Traffic maps show that traffic is backed up on both sides of the freeway, impacting other freeways as well.

Public Works was also on its way to a call of a flood on Artesia Boulevard, between Long Beach Boulevard and S. Susana Road, Dandoy said.

PREVIOUSLY: Heavy rain, hail over North Long Beach Wednesday afternoon surprises residents

3:27 p.m. | It may be sunny in Downtown, but cameras were out in North Long Beach as community members witnessed heavy rain and hail in the area on Wednesday afternoon.

The wet and icy weather is contributing to a storm cell that has been over the Compton area for at least two hours and moving slowly northeast, said National Weather Service spokeswoman Kristen Stewart.

Stewart said there were reports of hail in other parts of Los Angeles County, including Calabasas.

Community members said some streets in North Long Beach are experiencing flooding, including Artesia Boulevard from Santa Fe Avenue to Long Beach Boulevard.

North Long Beach resident Dan Pressburg said the last time he remembers hail in the area was about 20 years ago.

“We had lightning hit the tree in front of my home,” Pressburg recalled.
