UPDATE 12:59pm Friday | Police today announced that two suspects have been arrested and will be charged with attempted murder after a shooting at MacArthur Park last weekend left one officer hospitalized.

Long Beach residents David Silva and Eric Sianez, both 19, will be arraigned at the Long Beach Courthouse at 1:30pm today to hear charges including brandishing a firearm, attempted murder of a police officer with great bodily injury, assault with a deadly weapon and shooting at an occupied vehicle. Gang enhancement allegations will accompany the charges, which could significantly increase the suspects’ prison time if convicted.

Last Saturday evening, officers were responding to reports of gang activity in the area surrounding MacArthur Park when two suspects pulled up in a car alongside their unmarked Police car and unloaded two shots. One officer was shot and injured but has been released and will make a full recovery, said McDonnell. The suspects were attempting to leave the area when they saw the officers.

“I think anybody who was going to get in their way, they were going to do what they had to do to get away,” McDonnell said. He also said that the suspects are known members of a prominent street gang but declined to state which one.

“That’s what they’re looking for, is the notoriety, so we won’t give them that at this point.”

Using forensic evidence and interviews with witnesses and community members, officers located both Sianez and Silva and arrested them this week. Sianez was arrested around 2:00pm on Tuesday at Cowles and Magnolia, while Silva was found near the 710 Freeway and Del Amo Blvd. on Wednesday around 4:10pm.

Police are still investigating the possibility that more suspects may have been involved.

Several Long Beach Police Department details – gang, narcotics, warrant and forensic – collaborated on the case along with U.S. Marshals and Los Angeles County Sheriffs.
