Friday, May 13, 7:01pm | There will be a whole lot of pedaling going on in Long Beach Saturday, May 14, during the second annual Tour of Long Beach.

Nearly 2,000 cyclists are expected to participate in this year’s Tour of Long Beach event benefiting Miller Children’s Hospital Long Beach.

Bicyclists of all levels from beginner to experienced will take a leisurely 31-mile tour circuit through Long Beach parks and scenic neighborhoods and along beaches, inland bays and the downtown waterfront.

A 4-mile family fun ride along the city’s beach bike path is also being offered for riders of all ages.

Stacey Toda, a spokeswoman for Mayor Bob Foster’s Office, said in a Thursday e-mail that this year’s event raised a total of $120,000, which is double the amount raised at last year’s inaugural event.

She added that the number of riders at the start line on Saturday —  roughly 2,000 are expected according to registration numbers tallied after Thursday’s registration deadline — will be about double the number of riders in 2010.

Some 200 volunteers are offering their time to help make the event possible, Toda said.

Both the tour and the ride begin at Marina Green Park, 540 E. Shoreline Dr., with the tour kicking off at 8 a.m. and the fun ride at 9 a.m.
