Following its initial warning, the City of Long Beach is reiterating to its utility customers that a nationwide scam is continuing to trick people into providing personal financial information in exchange for the false promise of getting their utility bills paid by the federal government.
There is no such federal program. The scam involves the perpetrators providing a bogus bank routing number for customers to use. Customers are encouraged, as they were in the May 10 warning, to avoid any of these offers, despite their appeal or so-called promises.
Protect your personal information at all times, and never give out your social security number or any other personal financial information.
