Over a dozen neighbors, some in their pajamas and robes, gathered outside a Wrigley neighborhood after a vacant home caught fire Friday night.

The 2000 block of Golden Avenue was consumed by the smell of ash as firefighters responded around 9:32 p.m. to a report that smoke was emerging from the front of a residential home.

Long Beach fire spokesperson Jake Heflin said firefighters arrived four minutes later to find the living room of a house that was being remodeled on fire. Firefighters extinguished the fire after 15 minutes, Heflin said. No injuries were reported.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire, Heflin said.

Emergency personnel closed off of Golden Avenue, between 20th and 21st streets, as they did an overhaul to make sure there were no hidden fires.

Neighbors who gathered to see what all the fuss was about said they didn’t manage to catch a lot of what was going on.

One local resident called the incident a “waste of time,” piqued that the fire seemed to have woken up the “whole” neighborhood.
