Residents of a Downtown Long Beach apartment high-rise are seeking the public’s help in identifying a roller-skating thief who entered the building’s premises without permission twice in one week and stole items from the property.
A concerned resident who lives in the Royal Palms Apartments at 100 Atlantic Ave. contacted the Post with information about the burgularies including footage from the building’s security cameras that clearly show a young woman on roller skates entering the parking lot on Saturday November 3 and leaving with a bicycle that was locked to an indoor rack. Another video shows the same roller-skating suspect entering the building’s laundry room on Wednesday November 7, taking clothes out of a dryer, placing them in a bag and skating off.
“This is all just crazy to me,” said the resident, Laura Buchwald. “No one suspected a cute young girl on roller skates to be a well-trained thief. There are so many things about these videotapes that blow my mind.”
A letter sent by building management to shareholders on Monday says that each time the suspect gained access to the building, it was because someone opened the front door for her, and that the office was also closed, indicating that she was probably familiar with the building and its operations.
Residents were urged to not open the door for any person they don’t know or allow anyone to follow behind then when entering or exiting.
Unfortunately, this is not the first time this year that the Royal Palms has fallen victim to thieves. The same resident who alerted the Post to these most recent incidents also says there were multiple instances of bike thefts occurring from the underground garage over the summer.
“It seems at this point, the only thing I can do for this crazy ‘Downtown Long Beach Free for All,’ is try to expose some of it,” Buchwald said.
