Monday, January 20 more than just a federal holiday commemorating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It is also a Day of Service celebrated around the country by volunteers who spend their time embodying Dr. King’s message of unity, tolerance and community. 

This year, there are no shortage of Long Beach Day of Service events that are looking for volunteers. Below are a list of them by council district. 

1st District – TREE PLANTING
Volunteers needed to help plant trees along 4th Street in downtown to help beautify the neighborhood.
WHEN: MLK Day, January 20, 2014, 10 am – 12 pm
WHERE: Meet at Bird Cage Café, 224 W. 4th Street (between Cedar and Pacific).
VOLUNTEERS: 10-20
TO BRING: Bring hats, gloves and sunscreen.

7th District – TREE PLANTING
Volunteers needed to help plant, stake, mulch and water 15 new street trees in new sidewalk cuts on 37th St, 36th St, Wardlow Rd and Atlantic Ave. Part of Cal Heights ReLeaf Infill Tree Planting program with the California Heights Neighborhood Association.
WHEN: January 20, 2014, 9 am – 12 pm
WHERE: Volunteers should gather on E 37th Street in California Heights, adjacent to the Carl’s Jr. at 3700 Atlantic Ave for check in and planting demonstration. 
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: 15-20. Volunteers should be prepared to dig with shovels and lift up to 30 pounds. Cotton gloves and tools will be provided.
TO BRING: Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes and hats or sunscreen.

8th District – TREE PLANTING
Volunteers needed to help plant up to 40 trees in Scherer Park. The trees being added will diversify the park’s ecosystem. Some of the trees are deciduous, allowing for shade in the summer and sunlight in the winter, as well as beautiful fall colors. 
WHEN: MLK Day, January 20, 2014, 9AM- 12PM
WHERE: Scherer Park, off of Atlantic Ave. between 46th Street and Del Amo Boulevard. Meet at 9AM in the parking lot off Atlantic by the North Police Substation. Trees will be planted in five locations throughout the park. 
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: 100+
TO BRING: Work gloves and shovels, if possible. Participants should come prepared to do physical manual labor.

9th District – NEIGHBORHOOD CLEAN-UP
Clean up of trash/debris in the vacant lot surrounding the soon-to-be-demolished Atlantic Theatre, and the surrounding Houghton Park Neighborhood. Preparing for the following week’s Uptown Renaissance Festival.
WHEN: MLK Day, January 20, 2014, 9AM – 12PM
WHERE: Meet at the Atlantic Theatre, 5870 Atlantic Ave.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: 25-40
