A woman was killed Friday morning when the driver of a semi truck trying to make a right turn on a Long Beach road struck her, authorities said.

The crash happened at about 9:35AM at the intersection of Lakewood Boulevard and Willow Street, according to Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) spokesman Sgt. Brad Johnson.

“Officers arrived and discovered that a 2000 Freightliner semi-truck and trailer (car carrier) was traveling westbound on Willow Street and was making a right turn to go northbound on Lakewood Boulevard when it struck a female pedestrian that was in the intersection of Willow/Lakewood,” Johnson said.

According to witness statements, the pedestrian was legally crossing in the crosswalk, officials stated. The woman, described as a 63-year-old Long Beach resident, was found lying on Lakewood Boulevard, just north of the crosswalk. The driver, a 53-year-old resident of La Puente, remained at the scene.

Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) personnel determined the victim dead at the scene. The woman’s name will be released once the coroner’s office has identified the victim and notified relatives.

Several lanes of the intersection were blocked off this morning while police investigated the incident.
