UPDATE | The woman who was hit by a car in the area of 56th Street and Cherry Avenue Wednesday night talked about walking into traffic before doing so, and has now been declared dead, according to the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD).

According to the LBPD, a female was reported to be walking in the middle of the street and into traffic, when the woman was ultimately struck by a vehicle, resulting in her death.

The officers were dispatched at 10:26PM, and upon arrival discovered a woman lying in the northbound lane of traffic of Cherry Avenue and Market Street. A passerby had begun attempting life-saving measures on the victim, which the officers continued until the Long Beach Fire Department arrived.

According to the release, the female sustained serious injuries and was transported to the hospital by paramedics in critical condition. The LBPD was notified that the woman had been declared deceased Thursday afternoon.

Upon investigation, officers determined the female had run into traffic and was struck by a 2004 Nissan 350Z traveling north on Cherry Avenue. Officers learned the victim had gone to a location in the area to see an acquaintance, was “distraught and made comments about running into traffic.”

However, before the acquaintance could take action, the victim moved from the location, ran into the street and was hit by the car.

The victim’s identity will be released, pending notification of next of kin, according to the release.
