A woman in her 30s was fatally shot Sunday afternoon and a man suspected of shooting her was arrested later in Los Angeles following a pursuit, police said.

The shooting occurred around 3:30 p.m. Sunday at a strip mall in the 6600 block of Cherry Avenue, according to the Long Beach Police Department. LBPD officers were called to the area following reports of a stabbing but found that the victim had been shot multiple times in the upper and lower body.

Despite officers rendering life-saving measures, the woman later died at a local hospital.

Police say the woman was sitting in her car with another person when a man walked up and “fired multiple rounds through the vehicle, directed at the victim.” The other person in the vehicle was unharmed.

Officers later identified the suspect as 32-year-old Wilmington resident Corderell McKnight. According to police, the victim and suspect were long-time acquaintances and the shooting was targeted. The victim is only being identified as a woman in her 30s pending positive identification by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner.

Around 7:12 p.m., officers located McKnight in the 2800 block of Long Beach Boulevard and attempted a traffic stop, but he fled, leading officers on a pursuit, according to LBPD. About 20 minutes later, the pursuit was handed off to California Highway Patrol after McKnight entered the 405 Freeway.

Later that night, detectives learned that McKnight had been arrested by the Los Angeles Police Department, and he was then transferred back to Long Beach by the LBPD.

McKnight was booked into the Long Beach City Jail for one count of murder and is currently being held on $2 million bail.
