The skies over Long Beach will be filled with more than a dozen World War II era aircraft today in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the end of the war.

Starting around noon, the Commemorative Air Force’s Inland Empire Wing, will conduct a Victory Flight over several historic landmarks in Southern California that played a major role in the war, including the Queen Mary and the nearby USS Iowa battleship in San Pedro.

The Victory Flight hopes to honor the veterans of World War II, including personnel who were held as prisoners of war or listed as missing in action, for their service and sacrifice, to thank and honor the families of these veterans, and to pay tribute to the contributions made on the home front by the people of Southern California during World War II.

The 90-minute flyover takes off from Long Beach Airport at noon and will pass the port Long Beach and San Pedro complex around 12:30.

Fourteen World War II era aircraft are slated to participate. Aboard some of the aircraft will be veterans, Rosie the Riveters, and Holocaust survivors.

In May, another group, the D-Day Squadron flew over Long Beach and dozens of other Southern California cities as part of a Memorial Day salute to veterans and health care workers.
