It’s time for the debate to end, and for action on the brilliantly conceived Armory Park.  The proposed park is the brainchild of architect and lbpost.com columnist Brian Ulaszewski.  Brian has been fighting for the new park space for over four years.

For those new to the debate, Armory Park is an open space concept for the corner of 7th Street and Alamitos Avenue, right across from the Museum of Latin American Art.  Brian’s idea is to consolidate a series of four signalized intersections into just two.  This allows for the closure of one block of Martin Luther King between Sixth and Seventh Street to become green space.

The consultant traffic study initiated by the city yielded positive results—yet the city traffic engineer has resisted the proposal.  Traffic engineers do not design cities.  Our city management—under the direction of new manager Pat West—needs to re-evaluate this worthy project.

Armory Park has the unanimous support of every neighborhood group and community organization in the proposed park area.

Armory Park will:

– Create a new park in a densely overcrowded community that currently has none.

– Produce a central catalyst for a community’s revitalization.

– Provide an attractive gateway for the eastern entrance into downtown.

– Eliminate the most dangerous intersection in the city.
