The Long Beach Collective Association (LBCA) and Long Beach City College (LBCC), in conjunction with their respective workforce training programs, partnered in 2020 to offer this unique learning opportunity. The course will be offered virtually via LBCC’s Canvas Zoom. Beginning on March 7th, 2023, a new group of students (the 7th round!) will be introduced to the world of cannabis industry. Registration is currently open through the LBCC workforce training page.

Developed and taught by cannabis industry leaders, the course will extensively cover the cannabis industry as overseen statewide by the Department of Cannabis Control (DCC) and locally under area-specific municipal ordinances, as here in Long Beach.

The course is designed to benefit individuals from a variety of backgrounds. The past six (6) courses since the course was first offered included students who are concurrently enrolled in college and pursuing a degree to seasoned students who hold PhDs. The other spectrum of students include start-up businesses and entrepreneurs.

With comprehensive coverage of the cannabis industry, from cultivation to retail, the course will help both those who are brand new to the industry and culture as well as cultured professionals who are looking to enhance their knowledge and marketability.

The course is broken down into eight weeks of instruction and covers a vast array of topics. In the first week, students will learn about the history of cannabis in California, the laws and regulations governing the industry, the role of local municipalities, and a brief download of cannabis science basics.

In subsequent weeks, students will receive an overview of cultivation, product processing and manufacturing, testing and compliance, transportation, distribution, and retail. In addition to covering the fundamentals, students will learn about the industry’s track-and-trace system, which is used to monitor cannabis products from cultivation to consumption.

While this course does not provide job placement services, the content has been designed and is instructed by experienced industry professionals who understand the skills and knowledge needed to work in the cannabis industry and enhance marketability.

“I gained a tremendous amount of insight and learned a lot about the cannabis industry within the supply chain highlighted from each class session presentation. I think you and the rest of the staff (which includes all the instructors, speakers and participants) should feel proud for constructing a very informative and robust program about the industry of cannabis.”  ~ Student from previous course

“First, I would like to tell you how much I am enjoying the course. I am learning so much and every class so far has been so filled with information, that I need a lot more time to unpack it all. I have been downloading and re-reading and re-viewing the materials on an almost daily basis, in order to try and absorb all/most of what has been presented. I have no prior experience in the Cannabis industry, but I have been a lawyer for 25+ years and I am extremely impressed with the quality of the speakers and the slides. So thank you for putting this together. I’m really enjoying it and learning so much.” ~ Student from previous course

“This class has been so empowering! I recently was waitlisted for law school and got a little discouraged. But today I feel ready to really refocus and bridge my love for tribal/cannabis law and public policy together.”  ~ Student from previous course
